The outer jacket is windproof, waterproof and breathable, so it provides the necessary protection against the elements. Plus, it’s seam-sealed to keep water at bay and you dry. You can detach the hood as needed, as the high collar will provide sufficient protection in certain conditions. As for the inner jacket, it is responsible for keeping you warm! When connected to the outer jacket, it transforms the two into a super-warm coat, but you can also wear both jackets separately as well.
